Improving County Official Relationships with State Legislators

While at the Association of Indiana Counties, Karen Avery recognized growing frustration with communication between county officials and state legislators. To bridge the gap, she created a job shadowing program that brought members of the Indiana General Assembly into county offices for firsthand experience. During one visit, county leaders walked a legislator through the real-world impact of restrictive funding rules and the inequities they created. Seeing the issue up close changed the conversation, that legislator went on to introduce a bill to address the funding imbalance, and it was ultimately signed into law.

Volunteer Engagement - National Film Festival

Avery’s team was brought in to re-energize volunteer engagement during a leadership transition at an Indianapolis nonprofit focused on family films. Starting with a carefully designed, bias-free survey of top volunteers, we uncovered a critical insight: longtime supporters felt undervalued as roles shifted under new leadership.

We translated that insight into a clear, strategic action plan—complete with timeline—to rebuild trust, strengthen relationships, and re-engage the organization’s most important advocates.

Empower
Growth

Karen Avery led a dynamic, yearlong PR campaign for Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen in Nashville, Indiana  — a vibrant artist colony and regional tourist destination. The campaign centered on local musicians who created an original album, with proceeds benefiting the organization.

Through compelling storytelling, strategic social media, and targeted media outreach, the campaign built momentum ahead of a peak-season kickoff concert—turning awareness into action.

The result: $10,000 raised and volunteer gaps eliminated for an entire year.
